Spiritual growth looks different for different people, so how do you know what works best for you? Read on for personalized tips to grow spiritually for style 4, the Individualist. Each week we will cover a different Enneagram style and what they need most.
Heart center exercise: Experience God in the inner world and in your emotions. All heart center styles (2, 3, 4) naturally experience God in the external world. For growth, they need to experience God more fully in the internal world of their emotions. Practice connecting to God through emotion by experiencing that emotion as prayer. For example, instead of praying “God, I’m sad and grieving”, tearfully express that emotion.
Social style exercise: Physicality. All withdrawn types (4, 5, 9) take the approach of observation and withdrawing to address challenges in the world. The strength of this approach is that they usually develop a thoughtful solution to problems. The downside is that this pulling back and turning inward also creates a disconnection from the body. Engaging the body in prayer is especially useful for these types. Yoga, mind body exercises, prayer combined with walking or running, prayer postures are all ways to open the body center.
Spiritual discipline: Service. Giving back allows the 4 to use their natural compassion and direct their energies outside themselves. This is also a great antidote for 4s when they feel their energy pulling inward and downward (depression).
Prayer posture: Balance, hands out palms up in a level position. This mirrors the inner calm and consistency experienced by healthy 4s.
